See whether your text fits

Almost every piece of text has a limit: a word count on a university application, a character count in a meta description, a post length on social media, a page target on an assignment. This tool counts as you type, so you do not have to finish writing and paste it somewhere else to find out.

It reports words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time. Your text never leaves your browser — it is not transmitted and not stored.

Which number matters when

  • Characters — what social platforms and meta tags count. For site descriptions, 150-160 characters is a practical ceiling.
  • Characters without spaces — some translation and editing rates are billed on this figure.
  • Words — the standard measure for academic and application writing.
  • Sentences and paragraphs — the fastest way to catch a habit of long sentences: divide the word count by the sentence count.
  • Reading time — calculated from an average reading speed, and typically shown at the top of blog posts.

How to count words and characters in a text

  1. Step 1: Paste your text

Paste the text into the box, or just start typing in it.

  2. Step 2: Read the counters

Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update as you type — there is no button to press.

  3. Step 3: Edit towards your target

If you are over the limit, watch the counters while you cut — you can see exactly which sentence brings you under.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are words counted?

Sequences separated by spaces and line breaks count as words. This is the same approach Word and similar editors take, so the numbers line up closely.

Is my text stored?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser; what you type is never sent to a server or saved. Close the page and the text goes with it.

How is reading time calculated?

From the word count at an average reading speed. Technical or dense writing takes longer in practice, so treat the figure as a rough indicator rather than a precise measure.

Are accented and non-Latin characters counted correctly?

Yes. Every character counts as one, regardless of alphabet or accent.

Is there a length limit?

No practical limit. Because the count is recalculated on every keystroke, extremely long texts may feel slightly less responsive on slower devices.
